In case you haven’t noticed, in the age of COVID-19, our laid-back, ultra-liberal northern neighbor, Canada, is moving steadily toward tyranny, and there are not many people in the country who seem to mind.
In recent days, the country’s Liberal Party, which is led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has proposed criminalizing certain online speech as “hate speech,” though of course, as in the U.S., what is considered “hate” is very arbitrary and capricious and very much in the eyes of the authoritarian beholder.
Under the proposed law, unveiled Wednesday, hate speech could be punishable by as much as $20,000 in Canadian currency, or roughly $16,250 in U.S. currency, for a first offense and up to $50,000 Canadian or $40,600 U.S., for a second offense…
The proposed legislation by the Justice Department of Canada would tamp down on hate speech by adding language to the Canadian Human Rights Act and Canadian criminal code to try to clarify the definition of hate speech.
Such speech would be defined as “content that expresses detestation or vilification of a person or group.”
“These changes are designed to target the most egregious and clear forms of hate speech that can lead to discrimination and violence,” Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti said Wednesday, the CBC reports. “They do not target simple expressions of dislike or disdain that pepper everyday discourse, especially online.”
No one should believe him; we’ve heard that before in the United States, when Democrats in charge of government first began criminalizing only certain speech (which our founding fathers specifically rejected when they proposed the First Amendment’s ‘freedom of speech’ provision; it was to cover unpopular speech as well, which is really all “hate speech” is).
What began in the U.S. Congress has since spread to Big Tech; those platforms literally employ speech police — usually left-wing sycophants who are guided by what makes them feel butt hurt, not by what actually constitutes as harmful speech. Case in point: A black person can use the “n” word all day long when speaking to another black person, but if a white, Asian, or Hispanic person were to use it in their online speech, they’d be punished and maybe even banned from the platform.
Nevertheless, this is all very new for the Canadians.
“This bill will not target hate speech – just ensure bureaucrats in Ottawa are bogged down with frivolous complaints about tweets,” Rob Moore, the Conservative Party’s Shadow Minister for Justice and Attorney General of Canada, noted.
The First TV host Jesse Kelly noted weeks ago Canada’s trend toward tyranny. During an April show, he warned of a spreading authoritarianism that will be imported by American leftists as well.
“Have you been watching this stuff in Canada, with what they’re doing with the coronavirus lockdowns?” Kelly said, noting that in the previous week he reported on a church that had been ordered shut down having been subsequently raided by hundreds of police when worshippers who thought they had freedom of religion refused to comply.
“Look at what these cops are doing,” says a man taking the video of the incident. “They hit him in the head, they’re breaking his balcony. This is an old, frail man.”
“That’s an 85-year-old man. That’s someone’s grandpa,” a frustrated Kelly noted.
“Do you understand what’s taking place up north?” Kelly asked. “I want you to understand this. Like, ten minutes ago, Canada was your standard Democrat buddy. That’s all they were. ‘Ah, he’s not that bad! He’s not one of these radicals! He’s left, I realize that, but he’s not that bad. It’s fine.’
“And now they’re pummeling 85-year-old men and raiding churches,” he said.
