The British government has resorted to paying Britons not to use electricity amid an energy crisis, which a reliance on renewable sources failed to address.
According to a Breitbart report, more than one million households would be offered up to £20 ($24.10) to cut their electricity use between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. – with the first tranche having commenced on Jan. 23. Citing the Daily Mail, the outlet said eligible households “will be asked to refrain from using high-consumption appliances such as ovens, washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers and certain games consoles.” Those offered with the voluntary payment had been eligible as they availed of smart meters with an accredited provider.
It would be the first time such payments will be issued under the U.K. National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Service, which was introduced late last year in the hopes of preventing power blackouts. The payments would also be a de facto necessity, if not a welcome respite for Britons struggling amid the country’s cost-of-living crisis. A second round of DFS was put in place the following day, Jan. 24, which urged users to reduce their electricity consumption from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. as the energy supply situation did not improve. The U.K. National Grid said they had activated the load reduction for a second day, prompting the DFS scheme.
While the National Grid insists that there are no chances of blackouts, it has admitted that the country’s energy supply has been significantly reduced and that energy-saving measures are needed to “maintain the buffer of spare capacity” needed.
“Our forecasts show electricity supply margins are expected to be tighter than normal, [but this] does not mean electricity supplies are at risk and people should not be worried,” it said in a statement. The grid added that it has already activated three coal-fired power plants to combat energy shortages.
The DFS scheme to incentivize Britons not to use electricity had been driven by a combination of freezing temperatures, short days and little wind for the U.K.’s renewable energy grid. Wind energy in particular has appeared to have dropped dramatically, from making up just under 58 percent of the British electricity supply to dropping to only 25 percent days before the DFS scheme was announced.
Officials from the energy operator think that the DFS scheme could become a regular occurrence in British winters. One has even suggested that it could help boost the U.K.’s green agenda goals.
“It is something we strongly believe in, [as] it provides flexibility for the system and the consumer,” said Craig Dyke, head of national control at the National Grid. “We see this as a growing market. We [also] see this as a world-leading step forward into a space where we can only grow and drive forward toward Net Zero.”
But Marc Morano of the Climate Depot saw the scheme differently, blasting it as a part of a “Great Reset” on the energy supply. He warned that if the Democrats have another four years in power, the U.S. could also see the DFS scheme on its shores.
“We don’t get to vote on any of this. This is the Great Reset in action. It’s the Great Energy Reset,” he said.
“We’re suffering from transportation shortages. We’re suffering from food shortages based on the net zero agenda. And of course, we’re suffering from energy shortages. There’s going to be fines on people if they use their thermostats.”
According to Morano, it was ironic that the U.K. is having to conserve energy supply after years of investing in unreliable wind and solar energy.
“For the first time since the Industrial Revolution of 150 plus years ago occurred, they’re now fearing winter. This is insane, and they’ve shot themselves in the foot.”
