A whistleblower is alleging that former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey ran a “honeypot” espionage operation against the 2016 presidential campaign of former President Donald Trump.
According to the whistleblower, Comey sent two female FBI undercover agents to infiltrate Trump’s campaign almost immediately after he announced his intention to compete for the Republican Party’s nomination in June 2015. The whistleblower, an FBI agent involved in the clandestine operation, made the disclosure to the House Judiciary Committee.
This operation was kept off the books and involved the two female FBI agents traveling with Trump and his campaign staff on the trail. (Related: Obama appeals to Black men to vote for Harris based on race, calls them misogynists for their lack of enthusiasm.)
The whistleblower claimed to “personally know” that Comey ordered the investigation against Trump and that the former FBI director “personally directed it” himself. The whistleblower also alleged that former Deputy Directors David Bowdich and Paul Abbate were involved in helping Comey execute the operation.
The disclosure doesn’t indicate whether the FBI agents were able to get close to Trump. But the “honeypot” agents actively targeted Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, who would later be found guilty of the felony charge of making false statements to the FBI.
The whistleblower noted in the disclosure that the off-the-books investigation against the Trump campaign was not investigating any specific crime that Trump had allegedly committed. Instead, the agent described the operation more as a “fishing expedition” that was meant to look for any evidence that could incriminate Trump.
“[The operation] had no predicated foundation, so Mr. Comey personally directed the investigation without creating an official case file in Sentinel or any other FBI system,” said the agent in the disclosure, referring to the FBI’s case management software Sentinel.
The whistleblower claimed that the investigation into Trump and his campaign was only shut down after a news outlet obtained a photograph of one of the “honeypot” agents and was about to publish it.
Furthermore, the whistleblower alleged that one of the undercover agents agreed to be transferred out of the FBI and into the Central Intelligence Agency so that she could not be used as a potential witness in case the existence of the operation against Trump was made public. The other undercover agent was rewarded for her role in the operation with a promotion and is currently a high-level FBI executive.
“The FBI employee personally observed one or more employees in the FBI being directed to never discuss the operation with anyone ever again, which included talking with other people involved in the operation,” the disclosure stated.
A spokesman for the House Judiciary Committee noted that the committee has received the whistleblower’s allegations and “plans to look into them.”
