Even though the state’s electricity grid is already overloaded and facing potential failure, New York has officially banned natural gas and other earth-based fuel technologies from being used in all new construction.
The first state to do this, New York is following the scheme laid out by the Biden regime to shift away from reliable, earth-based fuels towards so-called “renewable” electric energy.
By 2026, the new law requires that all new buildings shorter than seven stories be outfit strictly with all-electric heating and cooking systems, which in the event of a power outage will leave residents cold and in the dark. By 2029, all buildings in New York, including those taller than seven stories, will need to be all-electric.
Exemptions to the ban include certain manufacturing facilities, restaurants, hospitals, and even car washes. Residential homes, however, do not qualify for an exemption.
The measure also cannot be overridden by cities or counties like climate activists had originally promised. It is either electric everything or nothing at all – meaning no heating oil or propane, either.

How New York’s rural communities will fare under the new rule remains to be seen. Electric is highly unreliable in rural areas, which are prone to inclement weather and routine power outages.
Electric-only homes in rural communities will freeze in the event of a winter power outage, as they will not be allowed to have gas or propane as a backup. And power outages are much more common, and often last longer, in rural areas. This means that many New Yorkers who live outside the cities are likely to die at the first sign of a grid failure.
The same is true of city dwellers, to be frank. A city-wide power outage will leave all-electric homes with nothing to provide heating or cooling.
According to the latest data, nearly half of New York is powered by natural gas, which is one of the cheapest and most reliable forms of stable energy known to mankind.
New York’s Democrats, just to be clear, want this cheap and reliable form of energy to no longer exist.
It should also be noted that hydraulic fracturing, also known as “fracking,” is banned in New York state. This has created an oil and gas boom in nearby Pennsylvania, which is known for its fracking operations.
Since New York lacks the sunshine that California has, it is sure to be cringeworthy watching the state’s Democrats come up with an alternative to natural gas. At best, the state will have to purchase wind power from other states or even other countries – yeah, that sure sounds reliable …
Keep in mind that New York’s electricity grid is already massively overloaded. Energy consumers are paying sky-high prices for electric service as a result – and after 2026, prices will only be even higher while reliability plummets.
“If you want to die of starvation in a dirt-floored hovel with no electricity or running water, keep voting for the Democrats,” one commenter wrote about the left-wing crusade against cheap and abundant energy.
“Democrats do not want people to be able to cook or bathe when they cut off your electricity,” wrote another about how leftists hate prosperity for anyone other than themselves.
“Democrats also ignore federal laws whenever it suits them,” said someone else. “The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, of all places, already ruled that banning natural gas is illegal. So, of course, New York leftists ignore it.”
