A recent national poll reveals that former President Donald Trump is still leading President Joe Biden, even though “Biden-Bragg-Colangelo” prosecutions against the latter have dominated the headlines over the past few months.
For 234 years, no American president or former president had been indicted until 2023 when Trump faced multiple charges in four criminal cases. He faces accusations of falsifying business records to pay Stormy Daniels, a porn star who claimed to have had a sexual encounter with him, to prevent a potential sex scandal in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential campaign. Michael Cohen, the personal attorney of Trump, paid Daniels $130,000 in October 2016.
In turn, prosecutors accused Trump of violating New York law by reimbursing Cohen through a series of payments disguised as corporate legal expenses during his presidency.
Local prosecutors also charged Trump with 34 felony counts in violation of New York’s corporate record-keeping laws. Meanwhile, Justice Juan Merchan issued a gag order on Trump to prevent him from publicly commenting on potential witnesses, jurors and others involved in the case. But after the trial commenced on April 2024, the judge twice held Trump in criminal contempt, fined him $10,000 for ten violations of the gag order and warned of potential jail time for future breaches.
These indictments accuse him of criminal activities before, during and after his presidency. But most voters believe these are all politically motivated.
According to the McLaughlin and Associates poll, conducted among 1,000 likely voters from May 9 to 15, Trump leads Biden by 47 percent to 43 percent, despite the intense media scrutiny and multiple indictments against Trump and his associates. This reveals a growing sentiment among the electorate over the alleged politicization of legal actions against the former president. Moreover, the poll found that 66 percent of voters believe the indictments are politically motivated, while 59 percent think Biden has directly played a role in these legal actions. Another 53 percent suspect that Biden intended to prevent Trump from winning the election by jailing him, but 33 percent of respondents disagreed.
The results reflect a similar McLaughlin and Associates poll conducted in March.
Two months ago, 56 percent of voters thought Biden sought to prevent Trump from winning the presidential election by trying to imprison him. A whopping 86 percent of Republicans agreed with the sentiment, alongside 50 percent of independent voters. However, only 32 percent of Democrats concurred, while 48 percent did not share the same view.
The March poll also revealed that 58 percent of respondents thought Biden played a role in driving the investigations against Trump, with 40 percent labeling his involvement as “major.” Additionally, 58 percent of voters stated they would support Biden stepping back from the legal battles and allowing the elections to proceed without interference, but 34 percent opposed the idea.
Furthermore, the March poll showed that Trump expanded his lead over Biden – 49 percent to 43 percent, up from a 47 percent to 43 percent in February.
